Gopher Control

GOPHER CONTROL

Pocket Gophers, commonly known as Gophers, are burrowing Rodents. They have external fur-lined pouches located on the outside of their mouths, which are used to carry food. They have clawed front paws for digging, small eyes and ears, and sensitive whiskers and tails. They’re able to close their lips behind their long incisors keeping dirt out while they dig. Pocket gophers are medium-sized rodents that range in length from 5 to 14 inches and their flat bodies make it easy for them to squeeze through their tunnels.

Pocket gophers breed once or twice a year delivering up to 5 or 6 pups. By 5 weeks the offspring are weaned and begin to establish their own burrows/tunnels. Average lifespan is 2-3 years.

GOPHERS POSE A HEALTH RISK

As is common with all Rodents, Gophers can be infested with Lice, Fleas, Ticks and Mites. Gophers are also known carriers of Rabies and Monkeypox. Although normally shy and reclusive, be particularly careful if the animal is out of its burrow and does not seem fearful.

Less recognized but a major health risk is injury from stepping into holes, tunnels or voids created by gopher burrowing. Twisted or sprained ankles are common injuries and even broken legs are possible from a bad “gopher hole” tumble into a tunnel.

PROPERTY DAMAGE

Gophers consume about 60% of their body weight in vegetation each day.
Some of their favorite foods are: Grasses, roots, herbaceous plants, scrubs, trees and forbs.
Their “holes” mar your landscape and their mounds are unsightly.

Gophers can break lines that lead to your underground irrigation and their little teeth can cause damage to underground cables as well.

Gopher tunnels can upset pipelines or its tunneling might shift the ground around your pool just enough to cause a crack you might not notice until your pool starts draining away.

In general, these destructive animals create havoc as a result of their constant digging.
